Norris Shores Annual Cleanup  -  2010 March Madness

How can you shake the winter blues, get a little exercise, meet your neighbors and do a good deed all at the same time? Participate in the Saturday morning clean ups in Norris Shores.

This year, we have much more planned than in the past. Here's a run down on the activities.

March 6: General clean up of Norris Shores roadways, including picking up litter and debris. We may have a chipper on hand for smaller stuff.

March 13: A focus on the marina. Plans are underway for some big improvements at the marina this year. As part of the effort we will clear overgrown brush along the perimeter of the marina site. This will improve the appearance and help prepare for renovation of the site drainage and retaining walls, and other site improvements. Come out to learn more about what's planned for the marina.

March 20: In addition to the ongoing Norris Shores clean up, Keep Union County Beautiful is sponsoring a clean up along the lake shoreline. Residents of Norris Shores are encouraged to participate. Contact Julie Graham for details at 865-278-3395 or via the Norris Shores website. (Select Vice President on the Contact Us page.)

Also, the NSPOA Board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at the marina beginning at 8:30am.

March 27: The finale will be our annual Firewise Day at the marina. State forestry experts will be on hand to explain how to reduce the risk of forest fire damage to our homes and how to respond to forest fires.

We will also have lunch for the community hosted by the Norris Shores social committee (contact Jan Bailey for details, at 865-278-3916 or via the Norris Shores website. Select Social Committee on the Contact Us page).

Events start at 9 am each Saturday.
Coffee and treats will be served. Bring gloves and wear sturdy shoes.

Any of the following will also be helpful: trailers that can be used to haul roadside debris; chainsaws; loppers for pruning vegetation; and pontoon boats for shoreline clean up. There is something that anyone can do to help regardless of your physical condition.

For general information regarding the clean up - Select 'Beautification' on the Contact Us page on the Norris Shores Website.

Norris Shores
2008 Community Clean-Up
Lookin’ Good

Norris Shores is looking good thanks to the annual clean-up. Clean-ups were held on three Saturdays in March. It was cancelled one weekDarlene Wine and Carolyn Shields end due to cold temperature and snow.
There was less debris along the roadways this year because Powell Valley Electric Cooperative apparently chipped some of the tree trimming last year in contrast to prior years.

In addition to the roadway clean-up, the volunteers spruced up the flower garden near the marina gate and retrieved debris in various areas along the shoreline.

All in all, the volunteers picked up over 50 bags of trash, 8 tires, 4 barrels, large pieces of styrofoam, a large water tank and other debris.
Piles of trash were collected and removed from the lakeshore and roadways.

Our thanks go to the 22 people who participated in the clean-up this year. These volunteers provided approximately 250 hours of services over the course of the clean-up. Unfortunately, participation was down this year. Nevertheless, with the exceptional effort of Laurie Oppel, who lead the clean-up, and the many others involved, we were able to make a real improvement in the appearance of our community. Special thanks to the few dedicated volunteers who showed up every Saturday.   Pat Hurley and Tom Sims take a breather.

The clean-up helps the entire community including enhancing the value of undeveloped properties. Plan to participate next year on at least one weekend.
